Frequently Asked Questions

telaGen is the industry leader in birth tissue recoveries. We strictly follow all Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Good Tissue Practices and American Association of Tissue Bank (AATB) standards. We also protect patient information through compliance with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
One donated placenta can be made into 50-100 allografts. Your single donation could provide healing and hope to 50-100 individuals struggling with a non-healing wound or burn.
It’s so easy.  A telaGen Recovery Technician will have you complete an informed consent and a medical questionnaire like you would if you were donating blood.  Once your baby is born, our recovery tech will safely package your placenta and send it off to be made into allografts.
Birth tissue is typically discarded as medical waste.
No, your delivery will go as planned and telaGen’s recovery technician will be there to collect the placenta. You may not even notice because you will have your new baby in your arms.
The amniotic membrane, also known as the “amnion” is the innermost layer of the placenta. Amniotic tissue includes the fluid and membranes inside the placenta. These tissues are responsible for developing and protecting your baby inside the womb. And when donated, the life of these powerful, healing tissues can be extended to help others.
The use of amniotic membrane for conjunctiva and ocular reconstruction was first documented in the 1940s. Since its entry into modern science, it has supported regenerative healing for a multitude of new therapies and procedures that rely on amniotic tissue donation for success in wound repair. Amnion tissue now supports millions of patients undergoing procedures for trauma care, healing severe burns, general and plastic surgery for breast reconstruction, gynecology surgery for assisting with the surgical site closure for hysterectomy, neurosurgery for spine and cranial procedures, and orthopedic surgery for wound, tendon, and ligament repairs. This tissue, naturally formed inside mothers to provide protection for their child, has opened the door to furthering its mission of protecting and healing patients in need.
Not at all. You can do both – preserve the cord blood for use by your family and donate your placenta/umbilical cord to be used to help others.

telaGen accepts donations from c-sections at all of our partner hospitals, as well as, vaginal donations at many locations. Ask your OB/GYN at your next visit if your hospital is one of our partners.

Each donor is screened for potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases that may compromise the safety of the recipient.
The FDA requires that a blood sample from each donor be tested for relevant communicable disease agents or diseases. This does not require an additional blood draw or needle stick for you as we ask the hospital to draw blood for us as they are drawing their own samples.
We are required by law to report any positive or reactive test result to your physician. You would, in turn, be notified by your doctor. If all tests are negative, no notification is required.
No, you nor your family or insurance company will be charged for any costs.
No, you are truly making an altruistic contribution to the greater good. Federal law prohibits compensation for your donation. We hope that you take pride in knowing that you and your baby contributed to the healing of up to 50 recipients.
The tissue is made into an allograft that can be used to treat patients with difficult-to-heal wounds, burns, and in many surgical applications. The unique qualities of the tissue promotes tissue regeneration.
